Internship Program

Have you ever considered a career in Arts Administration, in the economic development of an ever expanding and vibrant cultural district, in the institutional development of a complex and multifaceted organization?

The Internship Program at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is designed to elevate and inspire the next generation of leaders in the arts and non-profit fields. At the Trust, students gain experience in arts leadership through a semester and summer program that provides fundamental workplace skills as well as specialized training in specific disciplines. Please look over available internship descriptions below before applying.

Requirements, Length, and Availability

  • Fall and Spring │ 10-12 hours per week │ 10-15 weeks │Maximum 150 hours per semester │ $1,200 stipend, paid in two installments
  • Summer │20-25 hours per week │10 weeks │ Maximum 250 hours per semester │ $2,000 stipend, paid in two installments
  • Rising junior, senior, or one year post undergraduate degree, or currently enrolled in a master’s program.
  • The internship is also eligible for academic credit hours.

Arts Education Programming Intern

Project Description:

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Education Department provides a wide range of exciting, high quality arts education programs for students, educators, artists and community members seeking professional and personal growth. The Education Programming Intern will assist with planning, marketing, and evaluating various education programs in schools and in the Cultural District.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with registration and promotion of education workshops, masterclasses, professional development events, and other activities in the Cultural District.
  • Assist with program evaluation, including processing and analyzing surveys and reports.
  • Participate in the planning and development process of various education programs.
  • Develop social media and online marketing strategies for education programming.

Learning Objectives:

  • Event Coordination: Intern will gain hands-on experience in coordinating education programs and events.
  • Collaborative Programming: Interns will gain hands-on experience with the many moving parts of education program planning.
  • Artist Communication: Intern will gain experience in working with artists and arts educators directly and develop artist services skills.

Development Intern

Project Description:

The Development department raises operating funds to support and enhance the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust with its growth and development of the Cultural District. The department does this in a number of ways - direct mail solicitations, staff campaigns, grants, cultivations and special events.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in donor management including research, communication, event preparation and data maintenance.
  • Specific tasks may include building bios for individuals and institutional donors, creating agendas/materials for meetings and events, gift acknowledgment, and drafting messages for special solicitations.
  • Additional tasks and projects will be assigned based on intern’s strengths and interests.

Learning Objectives:

  • Donor Cycle Familiarity: Interns will gain an understanding of the fundraising cycle, from cultivation to stewardship. Interns will become familiar with donor relationship management through participation in direct mail solicitation and member events.
  • Donor Cultivation Experiences: Interns will assist with planning and preparation of cultivation and stewardship events.
  • Donor Records Management: Interns will participate in donor record maintenance and gain an appreciation for the opportunities of segmentation and analytics available using clean data.

Digital Marketing Intern

Project Description:

The Digital Marketing team is responsible for all promotion and marketing of performance, visual arts and festival events at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust through digital media. The Digital Marketing intern will work on projects that help support and advance marketing and communication efforts to reach audiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Website Management: The Trust has a number of websites and microsites to maintain. This position will be involved with keeping these sites up-to-date with current information as well as working on archival projects.
  • Social Media Management: The intern will assist with brainstorming and publishing content across various social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • Writing: The intern will contribute stories for blogs and assist with copywriting initiatives for email campaigns, social media posts, and websites.

Learning Objectives:

  • Collaborative Teamwork: Intern will gain significant experience interacting with and working alongside staff on smaller tasks for their respective teams, as well as aiding with the larger collaborative work.
  • Media-specific messaging: Intern will adapt advertising language and campaign materials using specific messaging techniques for social media, email marketing, and website projects.
  • Time management: Interns will actively prioritize and establish effective strategies to manage multiple deadlines.

Festival Programming Intern

Project Description:

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust produces a number of festivals to celebrate the performing arts in its many forms, often in unique places in spaces in the Cultural District. The Festival Programming Intern will work on the various large-scale public festivals, including Highmark First Night Pittsburgh (Fall) EQT Children’s Theatre Festival and the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival (Spring/Summer). Ideally seeking 1 person to intern all year.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the planning process of the various festival programs.
  • Assist with advance coordination of artists, performers, and musicians.
  • Work with Marketing Department on marketing, promotions, and social media for festivals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Event Coordination: Intern will gain hands-on experience in coordinating performances and events within a larger Festival setting.
  • Collaborative Programming: Interns will gain hands-on experience with the many moving parts of festival planning.
  • Artist/Agent/Organization Communication: Intern will gain experience in working with artists and agents directly and develop artist services skills, such as contract editing, arranging travel and housing, providing artist hospitality needs, lead outreach efforts to local organizations, providing on site assistance at events, working with finance department and more.

Marketing and Communications Intern

Project Description:

The Marketing Department is responsible for all promotion and marketing of performance, visual arts and festival events at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. The Marketing and Communications intern will work on projects that help support and advance marketing and communication efforts to reach audiences and support the mission of the Trust.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and distribute press releases for the variety of programs and events.
  • Copywriting assignments related to public communication pieces.
  • Assist in archives and documentation of season communications materials.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of promotional projects.
  • Assist Marketing Managers with marketing plans and communication efforts on Trust presentation and festivals. This could include: Broadway; Dance; Music; Youth; Education; Bookish in the ‘Burgh; Pittsburgh Humanities Festival; Children’s Theater Festival; Three Rivers Arts Festival and more.
  • Create grassroots marketing opportunities with research and relationship building with community partners.
  • Maintain Cultural Trust brand and show presence throughout Cultural District.
  • Write event and festival specific content for blogs, website, emails, and other marketing communications.

Learning Objectives:

  • Effective Communication: Interns improve written and verbal communication skills by interacting with a wide constituency base, including internal staff, community partners, media and touring show representatives.
  • Collaborative Teamwork: Interns will gain significant experience interacting with and working alongside staff on smaller tasks for their respective teams, as well as aiding with the larger collaborative.
  • Media-specific messaging: Interns adapt advertising language and campaign materials using specific messaging techniques for print, radio, and web channels.

Programming Intern

Project Description:

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents international, national, and regional performing, literary, and visual arts programming of professional quality for the cultural enrichment and education of children, teens, and families. The Programming Intern will work on the various divisions of programming, including the Trust Presents Series, Children’s Theater Series, Bridge Theater Series, and Highmark First Night Creativity Zone.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with contracts and visa applications (when necessary) for Children’s Theater Series, Bridge Theater Series, and Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents Series.
  • Assist with advance coordination of artists hotel and travel details on the Children’s Theater Series, Bridge Theater Series, and Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents Series.
  • Contribute to show offers, budgets, contracts, and show settlement processes.
  • Connect with local artists and community organizations for upcoming public festival events.
  • Develop outreach and marketing strategies for youth theater programming.

Learning Objectives:

  • Event Coordination: Intern will gain hands-on experience in coordinating performances, festivals, and events.
  • Collaborative Programming: Interns will gain hands-on experience with the many moving parts of season planning.

Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement Intern

Project Description:

The Strategic Partnerships/ Community Engagement Department provides a variety of programs and events to the Pittsburgh community. The department works with dozens of arts organizations, universities, corporations, and community groups throughout the city and surrounding areas, to better connect diverse audiences and people of all ages, to the arts.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain Tessitura database of organizational strategic partners.
  • Identify prospective strategic partners for specific organizational programs and initiatives around audience development.
  • Assist with seasonal event logistics and communication where needed. This includes but is not limited to Gallery Crawls and BNY Mellon Presents JazzLive.

Learning Objectives:

  • Self-Motivation: Intern will develop a sense of awareness for professional responsibility.
  • CRM Experience: Intern will learn how to use Tessitura software, an application used by over 650 arts and culture organizations to manage ticketing, fundraising, customer relationships, and marketing activities.
  • Effective Communication: Interns improve written and verbal communication skills by interacting with a wide constituency base, including first time event attendees, new strategic partners, and potential collaborators.
  • Collaborative Teamwork: Interns will gain experience interacting with and working alongside staff on smaller tasks, as well as aiding with larger collaborative and ongoing projects.

Apprenticeships

Teaching Artist Apprenticeship

About the Teaching Artist Apprenticeship (TAA)

This is an opportunity for individuals ages 18 years and older who are passionate about art and art education to gain skills and experience and build their portfolios and resumes. In collaboration with professional Trust Arts Education Teaching Artists, Teaching Artist Apprentices will help facilitate creative hands-on learning activities for students of all ages. Through this process, Teaching Artist Assistants will learn how to develop their own lesson plans and curriculum, as well as implement classroom management skills, while serving as mentors to aspiring young artists. TAA’s schedule will be flexible so there will be opportunity to rotate throughout different programs during the apprenticeship to gain exposure to a variety of artistic mediums and teaching styles.

  • TAAs will be expected to work 15-20 hours per week
  • The apprenticeship will run for 8 weeks from June 12-August 4
  • TAAs must submit FBI criminal, PA criminal and PA child abuse clearances prior to the program start date

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Teaching Artist with prep, clean up, implementation, and facilitation of activities
  • Help maintain supplies, materials, and tools for activities
  • Help set up and/or break down creative activities
  • Welcome and assist with all children as they learn and work on their projects
  • Help inspire and assist program participants

Qualifications:

  • Must enjoy working with children
  • Must have or be willing to secure state and federal clearances for working with children
  • Must feel comfortable instructing children and upholding basic rules and policies
  • Required to attend orientation and any meetings or trainings
  • Art and/or craft skills (visual, performing and/or music)
  • Creative problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently
  • Passion for art, education, and community engagement

Compensation:

  • $16/hr plus travel reimbursement

Note: TAAs are in charge of supervising children and need to be committed to supporting a safe and creative learning environment.
