Every summer hangout needs a few key ingredients to truly shine: prime seating, shady spaces, delicious drinks and food, and fun games. Top it off with great entertainment under string lights, and you’ve got the ultimate summer escape! That’s exactly what awaits you at the Giant Eagle Foundation Backyard at 8th and Penn this season.

People sit oustide in colorful chairs and around tables as the sun sets.

Here are five ways to make the most of your summer in our freshly transformed space:

1. A New Hangout Spot

Picture your favorite backyard experience—now imagine it on a larger scale for everyone to enjoy. Thanks to the Better Block Foundation, the Giant Eagle Foundation Backyard will feature cool furniture, playful lighting, fun yard games, and a vibrant mural, creating the perfect spot for the whole community to relax. Join us for the grand opening on July 26 and be the first to see the space in action!

2. Pickleball Tuesdays & Thursdays

Get ready to serve up some fun with pickleball on Tuesdays and Thursdays! Thanks to PUMP's Pittsburgh Sports League (PSL), players of all levels are welcome to join in on the action at the two new pickleball courts. Grab your paddle, rally your friends, and enjoy some friendly competition in this fast-growing sport.

3. Fashion-Filled Wednesdays

Wednesdays in the Cultural District are all about style and music! The Pittsburgh Downtown Neighbors Alliance (DNA) will host night markets featuring fashion boutiques where you can shop for the latest trends. As you browse, enjoy live local music that sets the perfect backdrop for an evening of fashion and fun.

4. Live Entertainment and Delicious Food Vendors

No summer in the Cultural District would be complete without a rotating roster of live entertainment and mouth-watering food vendors. From local bands and performers to an array of delicious food trucks and vendors, there will always be something new to experience.

5. Games Galore

Unleash your playful side with our pop-up paradise of games! From seesaws to trampolines, the Giant Eagle Foundation Backyard offers a fantastic array of activities for families and friends to enjoy. It’s the ideal spot for fun and laughter all summer long.
